Lawyers in Australia: Statistical Overview
The legal community in Australia is growing through the years. This shows in the numbers presented by different statistics. The National Profile of Solicitors presents data from the state and territory law societies and regulators showing a total of more than 83,643 lawyers.
In 2020, 43% of those are in New South Wales. 25% belongs to the state of Victoria. 16% is from Queensland. 7% is in Western Australia. 3 percent for the Australian Capital Territory. And only 1% in Tasmania.
There are more than 16,000 law firms in the country. The top areas of practice in Australia are Litigation, Insurance Law, Corporate Law, Commercial Law, Construction & Infrastructure Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Real Property Law, Insolvency and Reorganization Law, and Labor and Employment Law.
Women make up 53% of these lawyers and 47% are men. The average age of Australian solicitors is 42 years old. The demographic also shows an increase in older lawyers. 13% of male practitioners are 65 years old and above. It shows 2% of this in the number of female lawyers. The percentage may be because of the timeline of when they started working or the number of those who retire early.
Australian practitioners who are in private practice account for 67%. Men dominate this practice area. Other practice areas where the majority are female lawyers include 16% in-house, 12% government roles, and 3% community legal positions.
There are also 632 indigenous lawyers identified in the country. 55% of them are women and 45% are men.
Despite the pandemic, the demand for lawyers remains high. The average salary of lawyers in Australia is $118,798 annually. The most experienced lawyer can earn up to $150,000. A Partner can earn up to $110, 000 – $142,000 annually. While corporate lawyers’ annual salary can range from $137,000 to $176,000.
