About us

The Greenwall Company is the premier producer, installer and maintainer of the most sustainable Greenwalls, Greenroofs and Green Gabions in Australia. Founded by award-winning horticulturist Mark Paul over 35 years ago, his vision to reclaim the built environment by clothing the facades of buildings with epiphytic and lithophytic planting to create a living, breathing architectural function to every building has become a reality. To date, they have installed their lightweight soil-free sustainable green infrastructure systems in over 2,000 projects across Australia. Their projects can be seen from Australia and New Zealand to Singapore and Brazil. Continued commitment to deliver truly sustainable greening options for both residential and commercial projects has seen The Greenwall Company spend over three decades testing, designing, re-designing, and mastering their greenwall, greenroof and green gabion planter solutions, ensuring they will last the lifetime of the building on which they are installed. This has also resulted in each installation now being created from 96% of recycled materials that otherwise would be destined for Australian landfill, making them the most sustainable solution in the market. The Greenwall Company are 100% Australian-owned and operated. Working with architects, landscape architects, designers, and builders, they use their award-winning design techniques, passion and expertise in horticulture to bring their greenwalls, green roofs and green gabion planters to a new level of integration within the built environment. No two installations are the same, with each project being designed to take into consideration the key elements the plants need to flourish all year round. We have a variety of solutions no matter how large or small the space may be, with the ability to adapt designs for difficult spaces.

Project Profile: The University of QLD – Global Change Institute  Vision: The UOQ's Global Change Institute wanted to create a living building that would ultimately maintain itself and contribute to the restoration and regeneration of the environment.  How we helped: The Greenwall Company installed a 70m2 panelled greenwall over the air-conditioning vents. This formed part of the air filtration system, allowing the greenwall to clean and purify the air, which facilitates the idea of a “living building”.  Over a 12-month period, a standard 2sqm panel will only require the equivalent of 3 days of average household water use to maintain the wall. Part of the nutrition and irrigation of the greenwall is also sourced from the fishpond and the greenwall runs as a vertical wetland in the lower section.  The result: Each greenwall was installed in a way that will eventually allow them to be self-sustained within the building, needing only minimal maintenance. The design also truly embodies the university’s green ethos and ongoing commitment to sustainability in research and education.  Project Details: Size: 70sqm                            Current age of wall: 10 years Partners: Hassell Studios - David Whittaker     Installed: 2013

Project Profile: Manly Family Home – Strip Panel Greenwall   Vision  The owners of this beautiful family home were looking for a way to enhance their outdoor dining space and compliment the already luscious landscaping that was low maintenance but provided full coverage from day one. How we helped The team devised a plan to install pre-planted 250mm strip panels to the retaining wall to tie in with the current landscaping of the area. The strategic plant selection ensures a natural flow but also includes species that are low-maintenance and were suitable for the space taking into consideration the light, airflow and aspect. The panels feature 18 different plant species that are watered by an automated irrigation system that uses approximately 1.6 litres per day. Monsteria growing in pots to the side of the wall finishes the look.   Project Details: Size: Custom 3m (w) x 0.25 (H) Installed: 2023  #greenwallproject #backyardoasis #poolsideparadise #lushgreenery #clientlove #natureathome #greenwallartistry #thegreenwallcompany

Project Profile: Crows Nest Family Home - Greenwalls Vision  COSO Architects engaged us to complete this family home and create a welcoming green outdoor space for all to enjoy. The main challenge we faced was the tight space we had to work with, and also the fact that there wasn't a lot of natural light. How we helped Spanning over 5.0sqm this beautiful greenwall was a bespoke design created and installed using 95% of recycled materials. The structure features two standard panels and a one customised panel to cover the space required. Working closely with Coso Architecture, we were able to design a planting plan for this tight inner-city space with limited sunlight. Careful plant selection was required to ensure the wall thrived but also met the clients wishes, this resulted in 18 different epiphytic and lipophytic plant species, including large aroid leaves as the highlight.   Project Details:  Size: 5sqm                         Current age of wall: 3 years  Partners: COSO Architects            Installed: 2020 #plants #greenwall #verticalgarden #gardenstyle #landscapedesign #gardening #gardeningaustralia #ecopillows #reclaimthebuiltenvironment #horticulturist #australiawide #greeningaustralia #sustainable

Project Profile: Alexandria Family Home - Greenroofs Vision  The greenroofs at this inner-city terrace home were part of a complete renovation of the entire property. The owners wanted to create a natural lookout from the skylight and much visible greenspace from every outlook within the limited space available. How we helped To ensure there was greenery visible from the living and master bedroom spaces we installed Eco Pillows on the lower roof space and also on the adjacent garage and pool area. By doing this it created a larger feeling space that also lifted the eye level complemented by a lush greenwall that pulls nature into the bifold doors. The planting palette was selected to offer coverage as well as aesthetic outlooks from the balcony to the rooftop, from the ground looking up and seeing plants cascading down and looking through the skylight you can still see nature. The greenroofs are maintained on a quarterly week basis. 🌿🏡 Living in Harmony with Nature: Natures Ecosystem 🌱🌍 Imagine a garden that defies all odds, transforming a barren sandstone base into a thriving, self-sustaining oasis right in the heart of the city. Meet Mark Paul, our founder, who turned this dream into a reality! 🏡🌿 Mark's property houses an astounding 140 plant species on the greenwall and 240 on the roof, creating a biodiverse haven for local wildlife, where the fishpond is even used to fertilize the greenwall. 🌼🌾 It's more than a garden; it's a living example of sustainable practice and eco-design, all on a mere 200 mm of media atop a sandstone base. 🌿🌏 Here's a glimpse of the magic: 🌿 Greenwalls & Greenroofs: Vertical gardens and lush rooftop plantings breathe life into every available space. 🌿 Rock & Tree Plantings: From lithophytic rock gardens to epiphytic trees, biodiversity thrives. 🌿 Natural Water Flow: Careful planning preserves the natural water flow, with rainwater storage and clever water management. 🌿 Zero Irrigation: No artificial irrigation used on the rooftop after 5 years of establishment – natural rainfall is all it needs. 🌿 Waste Utilisation: Chickens, carp, and careful mulching make the most of kitchen and green waste. So, as you set your eyes over this living artwork, remember that with passion and innovation, we can all take steps to create a greener, more sustainable world. 🌎💚 #EcoLiving #GreenWallCompany #LivingEcosystem #SustainableDesign #OffTheGridLiving #NatureInTheCity 🌿🏡

🌿🐟 Have you seen our living ecosystem at the Adelaide Zoo? 🌍🐾   Imagine a green wall that isn't just a visual delight but a fully functioning ecosystem. 🌿💧 Check out this masterpiece we created back in 2008 where a fish pond and lush greenery work together in perfect harmony. 🐠🌿   Our installation is a tribute to the beauty and complexity of nature's ecosystems. Here, the fish in the pond play a vital role in nourishing the green wall. Their waste becomes natural fertilizer, enriching the soil and supporting the growth of vibrant plants. 🌿🌊   This ingenious symbiosis is a testament to the ingenuity of nature, showcasing how different elements can coexist and thrive together. 🌏🌱   As you stroll through Adelaide Zoo, take a moment to marvel at this living ecosystem. The green wall not only captivates the eye but also serves as a valuable educational tool, highlighting the delicate balance that exists in the natural world. 🦋🦎   Come and find us in the Envirodome!   #Thegreenwallcompany #AdelaideZoo #Ecosystem #NatureInDesign #Sustainability #GreenOasis

🌿 Celebrating Biodiversity Month 🌿 An Eastern Spinebill nested upon our Alcantarea imperialis at the greenhouse. To highlight the incredible impact greenwalls and greenroof can have on biodiversity here are 4 important things you can to do contribute:   🌼 Habitat for Wildlife: Lush greenwalls and greenroofs provide a haven for birds, bees, butterflies, and even small critters but you can take it one step further with nesting boxes, water sources, dead logs to create homes for our native wildlife.   🌱 Native Plants and Diversity: Prioritise native plants in your installations that reflect the surrounding ecology, however, exotic diversity can still be important to provide all year-round food and habitat.   🐝 Support Pollinators: Have a balance of planting to support an all year-round food source for our pollinators and don't forget our birds. Bees are not the only sweet tooths.  🍃 Don't feel bad if it doesn't work out as planned: When trying to bring back biodiversity to an area it may tip too far in one direction. Like too many snails or too many ants, this is because there isn't a trophic cascade of life yet to keep things in check and balance. It may take some adjusting.    Together, we can create greener, healthier, and more biodiverse urban landscapes. 🌆💚   #BiodiversityMonth #GreenwallImpact #UrbanEcosystems #SustainableLiving #TheGreenwallCompany #NatureInCities #GreenRoofs #BiodiversityConservation
