Before AI took over our headlines, the real transformational breakthrough for architecture was Realtime Rendering. Why toy around with random image generators when you could be investing in detailed, accurate, beautiful renders of actual designs, and then navigate your way through them to increase review and approval productivity? This example using 3DS Max and Chaos Vantage illustrates why building an accurate model and moving between different cameras and lighting situations enables clients to see exactly what you are designing in a meaningful way. This video is a live screen grab not an exported animation. However this process then allows us to export both stills and animation at a fraction of the cost of traditional CPU rendering. So while I am sure AI will change the way we design, for now, lets focus on real design, real materials, real lights, and a realtime process that is fast, flexible and cost effective, taking architects workflow to the next level in terms of process, efficiency and marketing. _______ In order to demonstrate this tech demo, we needed an amazing as built case study to model from. We found this incredible design and context in Winter Creek designed by SOS Architects and Interiors by Studio TOM. Using the beautiful photography as illustrated on The Local Project, we put together a realtime demo that hopefully does justice to the real world example, but then further demonstrates the value and flexibility of design navigation and visualisation. _______ Why rely on one render, when you can see it all in realtime. Given my enthusiasm for Chaos Vantage I have gone back and animated a very simple static scene of my concept design, Halcyon. Arguably this would be even more compelling had I redone the scene with moving trees and water, but I am trying to convey an idea as simply and efficiently as possible given what I can now do on a single computer using realtime rendering. No longer do I need an entire render farm or huge costs of cloud rendering to put together a captivating glimpse of a design. I can simply animate my cameras an export a film in a compelling way. Sure, if there were more budget, animating the scene would be the next logical step, but I want to showcase to my clients that simpler and more cost effective solutions to creating more content are also possible. It may be simplistic, but there is now another way to tell your story. I am so excited by what's possible in realtime now. Let’s take a step back for a minute and revisit what we were doing before the AI race set us all in a panic. Real-time rendering is here and has been for a while now, but we’re no longer talking about it as much as we should. The ability to take an accurate, approved, fully adjustable 3D model and look at it in a photorealistic way is of way more value to an architect or a developer than an AI image. What Real-time rendering allows for is an almost limitless amount of visualisations and cost effective animation, which helps the process of design, not set wildly unrealistic expectations of a randomly generated image. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure AI promises to revolutionise architecture soon enough, but for now let’s focus on better presentations and design outcomes of what we are actually designing. While AI art is impressive, it’s not right and it’s not flexible, it’s just random concepts at a push of the button. It will get better, but for now it’s amazing, not useful.
