We had a great time with the Franklin Templeton Australian team at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia! Getting a huge group shot is like herding cats. 😹 So how do we do it? 🤷♂️ With a mad amount of planning and a megaphone. 📣 When working with the team at @rokt they were very clear that they wanted to get a group shot of everyone in the business that had travelled to Oz for their annual global kickoff. Before the 4-day event, we discuss the optimal locations and times that would work best with their schedule. Once the location was determined, we prayed the weather would cooperate and, on the day, set out the best composition where we could get everyone in the shot with a great background. We also had to ensure that we shot from an elevated position to have as many faces in the image as possible. Finally before we had everyone come out from a party of eating and drinking, we had the team set up in an outlined shape and had them herd those pesky cats into the centre of the frame as they slowly dripped out of the party. The Establishing Shot 📸 When you really want to tell a story about the success of any event, a wide, well-composed shot of all the participants in one place will do it every time. Showing a sea of people listening to a speaker or busily networking with one another speaks volumes about the level of engagement and the quality of the event. These shots from Rokt’s latest global kickoff at the Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park are a few examples of how to establish the general context of an event. Here are some tips when capturing your establishing shots. Things to think about: 1.      The interior design and lighting setup. Good venues are not only chosen for their capacity limitations but the experience the attendees will have at the event. The atmosphere created is intentional so ensure it features heavily in the shot. 2.      Best angle to shoot. What you’re looking for here is how the people are using the space and how you can include the environment to frame this interaction. Being above everyone is critical so find a high vantage point. 3.      Level of lighting. If you’re outside in daylight you’re generally good to go but interiors are another matter. Make sure to speak to the AV crew before the event. They’re always happy to adjust the lighting to help make the scene better for photographs. Things to avoid: 1.      Distractions. When you’re shooting wide you’re picking up a lot of details in the environment. Ensure that obvious distracts or other eye-sores are out of the frame if you can manage it. 2.      Converging lines. For the most part, you want to have your vertical lines in the photo to be straight. It’s much more pleasing to the eye and helps to avoid distortion on the edges of the frame. 3.      Weird faces in the foreground. Establishing shots are less about individuals and more about the crowd but if someone close to you happens to be pulling a bad face, it’ll be a major distraction. Take multiple shots to ensure you have a few to choose from. You don’t need to take a lot of these but a few well-placed establishing shots will make all the difference in ensuring the event being photographed looks like a major success. ✔ #eventphotography #eventphotographer #eventplanning #eventplanner #businessconference #conference
