About us

Metro Arts is developing the future of Australian contemporary arts practice, now. Championing all contemporary art forms, the two core activities of the organisation are developing and co-presenting contemporary arts. Within Metro Arts’ multiple venues, there are artists taking risks, creating, developing, experimenting, and presenting ambitious contemporary art. In addition to the artistic program Metro Arts supports the wider artistic community with low cost short and long term venue hire for creative businesses, photo shoots, rehearsals, exhibitions, performances, auditions, forums, celebrations and more. Metro Arts’ new home at West Village opened in September 2020 and will present an annual program of contemporary and experimental performing and visual arts. This new hub for West End’s diverse community will be the place in Brisbane to experience the work of contemporary artists ranging from the emerging to the mid-career and the established.

Last night the Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP helped us launch the Metro Arts 2024 Program - packed with brand new performances and exhibitions from some of Australia’s boldest contemporary writers, directors, performers, creatives and visual artists. Thanks to all who joined us for the launch! Working with artists is what we do best, and our creative team have curated a program of new stories and voices from across Australia to present a dynamic and compelling 12 months of ART! Our program cover stars are Full Spectrum – our first performance of 2024. Full Spectrum promises to be a audio sensory delight – an enveloping collision of electronic art brought to life by Brisbane composer and multi-award-winning sound designer Anna Whitaker, joined by visual artist Riley Towers. On the flipside of the program – you’ll find Kitchen Studio by Elizabeth Willing. Willing is set to transform the Metro Arts Gallery into an immersive art installation challenging perceptions of the modern diet and how food is created, presented in partnership with Brisbane Festival and Metro Arts. 🌟 Support Metro Arts: Join the Movement! In 2023, Metro Arts illuminated the artistic landscape for 400+ creators, showcasing 32 new Australian works, and earning 19 Matilda Awards nominations as a "champion of independent artists in Queensland." 🚨 Turning Tides: Creative Australia's Defunding However - December 2023 dealt a HUGE blow to Metro Arts as Creative Australia announced complete defunding of the organisation from 2025 - 2028. Feedback was we failed to show the impact of Metro Arts both locally and nationally. 🔗 Read More from this article published today by ArtsHub: Why did this multi-arts organisation lose its federal arts funding: https://lnkd.in/gVPuVvim 🔍What this decision means for the art sector: We’re here to help artists take risks, push the envelope and challenge the status quo - providing opportunities for art (in all its forms) to take the spotlight in our galleries and theatre spaces. Unfortunately, this decision now gravely impacts Metro Arts' ability to support the creation and development of Australian contemporary art across visual arts and performance sectors from 2025 onwards. This also means: * Less opportunities for the development of new work.  * Scarce resources for professional development, hindering the sustainability of artistic practices. * A missed opportunity in continuing to foster the development of the creative arts sector in Queensland, especially considering the lead-up to the Olympics. * A lack of understanding by Australia’s peak funding body for the arts regarding the value of multi-arts organisations like Metro Arts for the sector. 🔮 What's Next for Metro Arts? Well, we’re still launching our 2024 Program (as planned) on February 7.
But sadly, from 2025, uncertainty looms. 🖋️ Sign the Open Letter: https://lnkd.in/gx6bJygK In response to this challenge, we invite you, our cherished community, to sign an open letter to Creative Australia - sharing your Metro Arts experiences. Let's unite and demonstrate the profound impact our organisation has had on the arts sector. The letter will close end of the month- so jump on board and show your support today. We urge you to rally behind Metro Arts, share your stories, and let the world know that #ArtStartsHere. Together, we can preserve the long legacy (and impact)of Metro Arts, and ensure that our vibrant arts community continues to thrive. #SupportMetroArts #ArtStartsHere #MetroArtsCommunity #CreativeAustralia #ArtsFunding #StandWithArtists 🌟
