Educating for life-long success.

About us

The Cathedral School – Founded in 1917, is an Anglican school for girls and boys from early childhood to year 12, including boarding students from Year 7 to Year 12. Our campus is located in Townsville, North Queensland. We are ‘one school, one community with one vision’ - educating for life-long success. In the rapidly changing world of the 21st century, we are preparing our students to meet the challenges of the future. The careful balance of academic, sporting, cultural, spiritual, and social programs at The Cathedral School will equip students for successful and fulfilling lives. Our experienced and dedicated staff nurture and challenge students to perform to the best of their ability across the full range of school programs, and to take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that are available to them at Cathedral. The first thing that people notice when they visit our school is the warmth and confidence of the students they meet as they walk around the campus. These students are inquisitive, interested, and present; always keen to meet the new student or family. The school community is a microcosm of the modern world, embracing cultural diversity and acceptance of different backgrounds and life experiences. Rural, indigenous and international students join their Townsville counterparts in a school community that is tolerant, patient, and kind. Life-long friendships are forged as students work and play together in a supportive, inclusive community. Conveniently located on a single campus centrally located in Mundingburra, Townsville, students are able to progress seamlessly through the years, benefiting from the consistent values and high expectations of the school community. Students and staff feel at home in the beautiful spacious grounds, with magnificent rain trees and a natural freshwater lagoon providing an ideal environment to explore, learn, grow and work.

  • A visit from Dr Oliver Bellwood, Theoretical Physicist (Class of 2012) ~ Our senior maths & physics students recently welcomed a special guest speaker, with past student Dr Oliver Bellwood visiting the school. After graduating from Cathedral in 2012, Oliver continued his education at The University of Queensland with an impressive academic CV: 2012: Graduated from The Cathedral School 2015: Completed his BSc with a major in Physics at UQ 2016: Graduated with First Class Honours in Physics at UQ 2023: Completed his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics at UQ 'In August this year, I begin a position as a postdoctoral research scholar at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. While there I will be researching and designing quantum systems and quantum technology for a wide range of applications.' Dr Oliver spoke to the students about his area of research in Quantum Physics and offered some inspiring words of advice during his two-day visit. To the Year 12 class, the discussion centred around finding out what they are passionate about and leaning in, 'You don't need to be a top academic student at school to blow the world away, you just need to be motivated and passionate on a year by year basis in your learning after school'. Dr Oliver also provided some realistic life lessons that he discovered whilst pursuing his PhD. 'The most important words that I live by in my academic career are a quote from the very celebrated mathematician John von Neumann - "In mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them." This is fundamental to my career; I understand very little about quantum physics, but I am now quite used to it.' Director of Studies, Andrew Arratoon reiterated the importance of motivation when pursuing your career of choice. 'As a teacher who taught Oliver in his final three years at Cathedral, it was very rewarding and inspirational to hear about his post-school pathway. He delivered an important message of not giving up when pursuing your passion, regardless of what others think. Motivation and drive will come naturally if the passion is there.' Thank you Dr Oliver for your visit, we greatly appreciate your time and continued connection with the Cathedral community. #educatingforlifelongsuccess The University of Queensland Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology https://lnkd.in/gjBfhrHY

Across the last two days students from high schools in the Townsville region went head-to-head at the Science and Engineering Challenge on our JCU Bebegu Yumba Campus. The challenge is a collaboration between JCU and the University of Newcastle that is designed to inspire year 10 students to consider future careers in the field of STEM, by involving them in a series of fun and exciting activities that they would not normally experience in a classroom. Students were able to experience everything from designing bridges to building fish traps and even sending secret messages through coding light sequences. Congratulations to Ignatius Park College and The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James who were our overall challenge winners 👏

  • Congratulations Ella. An incredible achievement! 👏

“My identity is complex and deeply personal; to have this respected and nurtured IS reconciliation.” AIEF Alum Ella’s painting ‘Acceptance’ has been chosen as the cover image of HSBC’s third Reconciliation Action Plan. At the launch event, Ella (The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James, 2023) gave a powerful speech about her education journey on an AIEF Scholarship, the meaning of her artwork, and its significance for reconciliation. She is pictured here with AIEF Ambassador and HSBC CEO Antony Shaw. #AIEF #IndigenousEducation #ChangingOurNation

  • Recently, a group of eight of our Prefects, accompanied by Deputy Principals Simon Midson and Tonia Gloudemans, had the privilege of attending the 'Local Election-Meet the Candidates' breakfast at The Ville. The Cathedral students posed some insightful questions to the candidates... Natalie Tritton asked, "If you were to envision Townsville four years from now, what aspects do you hope to see changed or improved?" Izabelle Appleton enquired about the strategies the candidates had in mind to support and foster the growth of small businesses in Townsville, especially considering the recent economic challenges. Domenic Cavallo brought attention to the pressing issue of the housing crisis in Townsville, noting the lack of unit construction over the past decade and questioning the reasons behind it. Our school's participation in this event provided invaluable opportunities for our senior student leaders to gain insights into the workings of local government and to understand the aspirations for Townsville expressed by the candidates. It was a significant learning experience that allowed our students to engage directly with issues affecting their community.
