Last Thursday marked a significant milestone for the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, as we held our 55th AGM at Salesforce Tower. 🐨✨ With each passing year, our commitment to expanding national parks, healing our land and saving species grows stronger. The achievements showcased at the AGM are a testament to our collective dedication and hard work. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the attendees, donors, Board directors, and staff for a meeting where we reflected on our past accomplishments and looked forward to a future where our landscapes and biodiversity thrive for generations to come. Every day I feel the honour and responsibility of being the Chair of Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. It’s a privilege and an opportunity. The opportunity comes down to helping the organisation create impact that would not otherwise happen. I personally value Australia’s natural wonders and amazing National Parks. I appreciate the biodiversity loss that has occurred and continues to occur in this amazing country. Protecting and growing precious land and wildlife benefits everybody who lives here and will live here after we have gone. It is important work and FNPW does it well. We have a very proud history of impact dating back over 50 years. I would like to thank all of our donors and supporters and I would like to congratulate our team, our volunteers and our Board. Introducing the 2023 Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife Impact Report! Your support has been crucial in safeguarding Australia's #naturalwonders for future generations. This report showcases the amazing progress we've made together, aligning with international and national environmental objectives including the Kunming-Montreal #GlobalBiodiversityFramework and the UN's #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. 🤝 Highlights: 🏞️ 50+ land purchases supported since 1970. 🚵 Developing the Wapma Thura Southern Flinders Ranges National Park. 🌳 Expanding UNESCO World Heritage Listed Gondwana Rainforest. 👥 Coordinating First Nations co-management for all land acquisitions. 🐢 Working to save 1 million turtles in the Murray-Darling Basin. 🐾 Restoring habitats for 167 threatened plant and animal species. 🦘 Over 700 species supported through the Wildlife Heroes project. 🌱 Growing over 700,000 native trees for land restoration. 🪴 Launching the Fire Wise program with CSIRO to mitigate bushfire risks and promote biodiversity. How are we saving Australia's Little Penguins? Australia's Little Penguin is the only resident species to breed along the southern coastline of mainland Australia and Tasmania. 🐧🌿 Bushfires and heat stress threaten the penguins of Phillip Island so to address this problem, the "Future-Proofing Little Penguins" project was established so 'green' fire breaks, with revegetated areas of indigenous, fire-retardant plant species can improve their chances of survival. A total of 15,000 plants have been grown and planted at the Summerland Peninsula to help rebuild key "little penguin breeding habitat". The survival of the little penguins during extreme events have been improved as a result. 🌿 The regeneration of this site has succeeded in increasing habitat to maintain, recover and grow a healthy population of penguins. 🐧💗These measures not only reduce the risk of catastrophic impacts on the penguin colony and other wildlife but also provide safer environments for emergency services and support the local economy. A huge shoutout to the incredible Commonwealth Bank team for their hard work and dedication at Congwong Beach, Kamay Botany Bay National Park. 🌍🌿 The team made a difference in our local environment by cleaning up the beach, removing the Bitou Bush to allow the regrowth of the Banksia scrub, and propagating Pig Face to help stabilise sand dunes and attract native wildlife.
