We recently teamed up with Majarlin (University of Notre Dame, Broome) to offer a unique training opportunity for physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and 4th year therapy students in Broome. The focus? "Treatment of Motor Delays in Children with Sensory Dysfunction." Senior Physiotherapist Jenine Santovito, who frequently visits family in Broome, recognised the need for training opportunities in the area. Leveraging her connections, Jenine generously offered to lead a training session during one of her visits. This offer was eagerly taken up by the therapy organisations there. 💬 Jenine said “Sensory development is an important foundation for gross motor skill development. If a child’s vestibular, vision or joint position sense (proprioception) is poorly developed, there can be significant challenges for the child when learning skills like balance and ball skills. It can also affect behaviour, because they struggle to learn skills, keep up with peers, and don’t understand why.” Thanks to Majarlin for kindly providing the training room and catering. 👏 It was a great turnout, with attendees from Kimberley Therapy Services, Patches Australia, Department of Communities WA, and students from Curtin University and The University of Notre Dame Australia joining the session. 🌟 Behind the Scenes Flashback 🌟 In March, our very own stars, Karen Humphries (Clinical Lead of Dietetics) and Kim Dutkowski (Senior Dietitian) took the virtual stage at the Dietitian Connection NDIS online symposium. Their presentation on " A ‘how to’ on working with paediatric Autistic clients " was a hit, with an impressive 8/10 rating from 87% of attendees. The impact was undeniable with 266 joining live and over 900 registered for the symposium. ▶️ Last week, we partnered with our friends at Kiind to provide parents and carers raising Autistic children valuable insights on diagnosis and the early supports available. The webinar provided crucial information, from understanding Autism to exploring common traits, how it's diagnosed in WA, and the neuro-affirming approach. A big thanks to the Senior Speech Pathologist and Autism Diagnostician, Emily Turner, and Senior Speech Pathologist and Autistic Services Project Officer Kelly Scott for your insights.
