Although the incidents of canine attacks are rare, they still get a lot of attention because these cases are grossly publicized. The publicity creates an impression that they are more prevalent than they actually are. February 5, 2013 – Last month, two separate cases in Houston, Texas involved the attacks of two resident dogs on two children. A 4-year-old boy was killed by a pit bull last January 19 when he climbed a fence while playing into a neighbor’s back yard, while an 18-month-old toddler suffered severe bite marks when he was bitten by a pit bull that went lose while he was outside with his mother. Both incidents involve canines that were chained.

According to the National Canine Research Council, 64 percent of tragedies like these involve resident dogs. These pups are different from the usual family pets. They are the ones isolated by owners from regular, positive human interaction. An owner would normally keep these animals isolated on chains or cages.

These kinds of pets are not expected to display the same behaviors and social responses as usual family pets. They are deprived of the opportunity to learn appropriate actions through positive human interaction that is done on a regular basis. Being in chains and in an isolated stage makes them prone to malnutrition, illnesses, and aggression.

Dog whisperer and behaviorist George Lygidakis of SitDropStay explains that many of the issues that concern dogs these days could stem from frustration, anxiety and boredom whenever they are left at home on their own. “Dogs are social pack animals and if their instinctive needs, which include socialization, are not met, they can quickly develop behavioral problems,” he explains.

Lygidakis adds that it helps if they undergo dog training since it can help an owner understand and deal with their pet in a healthy way. This is beneficial if the owners are often away. Instead of leaving the canine alone in chains and cages, having them stay in training centers or canine day cares for coaching is a better idea. He says that “it is a great option for dog owners who would like to either enrich their dog’s lives or provide a more nurturing and social environment while they are away."
