About Asbestos Removal Central

Established January 2010

Asbestos Removal Central aims to educate people about the asbestos removal procedures and promotes the implementation of the National Strategic Plan on Asbestos Awareness and Management. It also promotes research on asbestos safety. Though asbestos has been banned in Australia since 2003, people are yet ignorant about its ill effects. The objective of Asbestos Removal Central is to spread awareness about asbestos exposure and to make information available to the public.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral of a fibrous composition. It is known to have high tensile strength and resistance to heat and electricity. This characteristic feature has always been used for industrial purposes since thousands of years. Its six different variants are Chrysotile, Amosite, Crocidolite, Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actionlike, each with its own characteristic feature and application. These different varieties of asbestos have been used in pipe insulation, brake linings, walls, roofs and in other commercial products.

However, asbestos use poses certain health risks to humans, most of which were unknown in the past. Asbestos fibers can easily be inhaled through the nose and reach the lungs, obstructing the passage of blood flow through the organ. Exposure to asbestos could lead to breathlessness, weight loss, persistent coughing, among other problems. Asbestos is also a known cause of asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and other lung disorders.

Considering its harmful effects, asbestos exposure is a major cause of concern and its removal, necessary. Since asbestos is banned in most parts of the world, only licensed professionals are allowed to carry out removal procedures. Asbestos removal needs various types of equipment- asbestos vacuum cleaners and vacuum bags, negative pressure units, air monitors and the lot. Another essential requirement is the use of protective gear for the safety of the workers. The contaminated area is totally isolated in whatever way possible and only then is the asbestos removed. The site is cleared and the asbestos is disposed of in particular ways. The air quality is constantly monitored to ensure the safety of the people around
