A decade ago, our QPWS Rangers took part in a rescue operation to save a pod of stranded killer whales. 🐳 Since then, Killer Whales Australia, who assisted in the behavioural monitoring of the animals during the 2013 event, have continued to closely monitor the family of 11, with multiple re-sightings since, from the Gold Coast to Port Macquarie. 🌊 One of the rescued whales (pictured), EA_0046A, was just a calf when it got stranded on the sand banks of Great Sandy Marine Park. We are delighted see it is now 10 years older, living on as the next generation within its family. 👪 Successful responses to stranding events are dependent on broad collaboration, involving a range of expertise. This event showed that with good management practices and the involvement of the correct resources and expertise, excellent outcomes can be achieved. 👏 📸 Out Of The Blue Adventures

Our hospital and the Qld Tissue Bank (QTB) staff went all-out to win the DonateLife Queensland 'Amazing Race Around Brisbane' ahead of DonateLife Week, which starts this Sunday. 🏃   Teams from the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), Ipswich Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital, Redcliffe Hospital and Queensland Children's Hosptial joined QTB, transplant recipients and donor families for some seriously fun activities, all for a good cause. Dressing up was obligatory! Everyone successfully navigated a series of novelty challenges around the Brisbane CBD, gathering points for speed, accuracy, problem solving and team spirit. The PAH team 'Keeping It Renal' (pictured here) was victorious on the day. 👏 A big shout out to the PAH’s team artist whose creativity transformed their nursing scrubs into mobile works of art — hand-painted organs and blooming with flowers, to symbolise the ultimate gift of life. The Logan Endocrine and Diabetes Service (LEADS) is helping people like Dean take control of their health. 🙌 LEADS is a Clinical Trial Unit run by Logan Hospital that gives residents first access to treatments for diabetes and endocrine conditions like Addison’s disease, Graves’ disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis. Dean is the first person to enrol in a trial for obesity treatment and said he was looking forward to taking a more active role in his health. 🤗 LEAD’s Clinical Director, Dr Puri, said the unit provided an exciting opportunity for the Logan community and the advancement of diabetes and endocrine care. 'The Clinical Trial Unit enables patients to access the newest, most up-to-date research treatments, and be monitored more closely and comprehensively than those receiving standard treatments,' he said. 'The unit will test new treatments to find better ways to prevent, detect or treat diseases while giving patients access to new interventions not yet available to the general public. 'Not only do the patients benefit from taking part in leading edge clinical research, but it also helps researchers to develop knowledge and understanding on the impacts of these medications on the human body.' Dr Puri said that the unit will operate under a consumer-centred, clinician-led, and technology-enable model of care. LEADs will provide value-based healthcare for all by building healthier communities through best practice care, research and partnerships.
