Our Executive Director of Services, Sandy Cham, recently appeared on The Morning Show to discuss the impact of cancer on younger people and the importance of having open and honest conversations about cancer with your family. “Families that talk openly, consistently and regularly about cancer adjust better and they have less distress. Our young people come to us saying they need more information and they want to hear it from their parents.” Sandy also speaks about life beyond cancer and the power of connection; “Connecting with those who just get it is probably the most powerful thing.” 💚 Watch the full segment here: https://lnkd.in/grGz-X9C #CancerSupport #YouthCancer #CancerDiagnosis

Supporting young people impacted by cancer
About us
We get it. Just when life should be full of possibilities, cancer crashes into a young person’s world and shatters everything. Canteen is the game changer. We help young people cope with cancer in their family. Through Canteen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, we provide specialist, youth-specific treatment teams. By feeling understood and supported, young people develop resilience and can rebuild the foundations that crumbled beneath them when cancer turned their life upside down. That’s how Canteen is the difference. (ABN: 77 052 040 516)

Recently our Executive Director of Operations, Raul Alberto Caceres sat down with Cathy O'Sullivan, CIO editor-in-chief for APAC and host of #CIOLeadershipLive, to discuss Canteen's donor prediction model, how we create value from data, and employing AI to improve services to support young people impacted by cancer. “It’s a combination of getting really technical, then talking to the stakeholders about their concerns, and then slowly building a roadmap to democratise the data held in databases. That’s the conversation, so everyone in the organisation can understand what the data tells them.” To read more or watch the interview, visit https://lnkd.in/g6m7JtiQ

Many people living with cancer in Australia don’t have access to new life-saving precision oncology therapies; and they can’t afford to wait. Canteen Australia is proud to support Rare Cancers Australia position paper on this important issue. Read the full position statement: https://lnkd.in/gbn2-M3h
RCA CEO, Christine Cockburn MPH, took a consensus statement to Parliament House last week calling for life-saving cancer drugs to be made urgently available to thousands more Aussies. Accompanied by Omico’s Chief Science and Strategy Officer, Prof. David Thomas, Christine met with Minister for Health, Mark Butler, and other MP’s asking for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) to expand access to the breakthrough PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor class of medicines for the more than 3,500 Aussies who would benefit. “Australia is poised to embrace new ways of reviewing and funding breakthrough cancer drugs and must do so to improve outcomes for those in dire need,” she said. “At the moment, patients with melanoma can access some PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors for roughly $30 through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). However, for those patients with salivary gland cancer, for example, they must pay thousands of dollars for the same treatment, due to restrictions in our health system.” “We propose moving away from the outdated process of reviewing medicines for specific tumour types, for example those specifically for breast, or lung, or skin cancer. Instead, we need to be focusing on the specific genetic and biological make-up of the cancer itself.” Thank you to the following signatory organisations for your support: BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Canteen Australia, Leukaemia Foundation, Lung Foundation Australia, Melanoma Patients Australia, Melanoma & Skin Cancer Advocacy Network (MSCAN), Omico, Pancare Foundation and Pink Hope.
