The Lord Mayor's Convention Trailblazer Grant recipients have been announced. Five Brisbane-based research pioneers have been granted up to $5,000 each to attend a leading international conference in their field of expertise, with the goal of bringing those conferences to Brisbane in the future. Brisbane Economic Development Agency congratulates the 2023/2024 Trailblazers: 🌟 Professor John Fraser - medical technology and devices 🌟 Dr Chris James - hypersonics 🌟 Dr Raisa Rudge - plant-based protein sciences 🌟 Dr Tamara Sopek - hypersonics 🌟 Dr Bojana Spasojevic - air transport and tourism The grants enable recipients to expand their professional networks and promote Brisbane as a hub of knowledge and innovation to an international audience, before working with BEDA, the city’s official Convention Bureau, to bid for future conferences to be hosted in the city.  An initiative of BEDA, the Lord Mayor’s Convention Trailblazer Grant was launched in 2017 and has directly resulted in at least six bid wins over four funding rounds, generating more than $9 million for Brisbane’s local economy, and a further pipeline of bids in progress for future years. Removing kerbside car parks and turning them into cycling lanes could make Brisbane more liveable without hurting small businesses, a researcher argues. Boundary Street in Brisbane’s eclectic West End was used as a case study by University of Queensland researchers, with Associate Professor Dr Dorina Pojani concluding it would be “appropriate and desirable” to turn at least one on-street parking lane into a bike lane.
