One night isn't a lot, but it can make a whole lot of difference I'm happy to share that this year marks my second year participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout and I'm once again dedicating a night to sleep outside and raise funds for the St Vincent de Paul Society. The subject of this cause is something that truly resonates with me. It's a complex social issue that often goes unnoticed and unfortunately, there's no quick fix. However, I urge you to take a moment and read on below. You might be surprised by some of the statistics and gain a better understanding of just how widespread this issue is. Homelessness is a complex issue that has multiple causes. It can be triggered by poverty, unemployment, or a lack of affordable housing. Family breakdown, mental illness, sexual assault, addiction, financial struggle, gambling, and social isolation can also contribute to it. But,!!! Domestic violence is the single biggest cause of homelessness in Australia !!! The below stats are taken from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest census estimates from 2021. We must work together to address this issue and provide support to those in need. Let's take action to make a difference in our communities. In the last five years, women have become the majority of new homeless individuals. Shockingly, the latest census also revealed that over a third of all homeless people are under the age of 25, with 23% falling between the ages of 12-24. According to the data, the number of individuals experiencing homelessness on census night exceeded 122,400. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals were disproportionately affected, accounting for a significant portion of the homeless population at 20.4%. This figure is noteworthy considering that First Nations people constitute only 3.8% of the overall population. Every night, thousands of individuals in Australia face the harsh reality of homelessness, and it's crucial that we come together to help break this devastating cycle.
