  • Pituitary tumours can have significant psychological effects on affected individuals due to their impact on hormone production and the functioning of the endocrine system. The psychological effects may vary depending on the type and size of the tumour, the severity of hormonal imbalances, and individual susceptibility. Some common psychological effects of pituitary tumours include anxiety and depression, fatigue, cognitive changes (difficulty concentrating, memory problems, slowed thinking), social withdrawal, stress, and fear of recurrence. It is recommended that individuals with pituitary tumours receive comprehensive care that includes not only medical treatment but also psychological support. Mental health professionals can play a crucial role in helping patients cope with the psychological effects of the condition, improve their quality of life and enhance overall well-being. • The pituitary gland is a small, pea-sized gland located at the base of the brain. It plays a vital role in regulating and controlling various bodily functions by producing and releasing hormones that influence growth, metabolism, reproduction, stress response, and other essential processes in the body. Sometimes, a mass of cells can grow within the gland, producing a tumour known as an adenoma, which is usually slow-growing and non-cancerous. Often symptoms of a pituitary tumour can be mild, non-specific, and gradual in onset and may have different causes; this includes visual disturbances, loss of libido, irregular period, fatigue, persistent headaches, cognitive difficulties, and nausea or vomiting. A pituitary surgical team may be required to treat/remove a pituitary tumour if it grows significantly, causes vision problems, or if it is over-producing hormones. #pituitary #pituitarytumour #pituitarygland #brain #neurology #symptoms

  • Once a pituitary tumour is diagnosed, treated options depend on the type and size of the tumour, the patient's age and overall health. Pituitary tumours are treated depending on the type and size of the tumour, the patient's age and overall health. Generally, the treatment options include: • Surgery - The tumour will be removed using an endoscope or microscope or, in rare cases, through the front of the skull. • Radiation therapy - This treatment option targets the tumour cells aiming to destroy them. Radiosurgery is focused radiotherapy that improves accuracy and minimises the risks of treating pituitary tumours. Used in conjunction with surgery and medications, its aim is to control tumour growth or stop the activity of hormone-releasing tumours. • Medication - Used to shrink the tumour and stop it from producing hormone-releasing tumours. Medication is used as the first line of treatment for prolactinoma.
