About us
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia's leading not-for-profit organisation funding world-class breast cancer research towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Since our inception in 1994, NBCF has invested around $200M into more than 600 world-class research projects across Australia. In this time, death rates from breast cancer in Australia have reduced by over 40%. We've seen remarkable results, but the job's not done. At NBCF, we’re determined to create a better tomorrow. We know research matters, and it is central and critical to improving breast cancer outcomes. That’s why we fund the very best breast cancer research in Australia by awarding grants via an open national, competitive and rigorous peer review process.

In a story published in the The Australian Financial Review (AFR) today, NBCF CEO Professor Cleola Anderiesz explains how prevention research is a crucial component of how we accelerate towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer in Australia. For 30 years, NBCF’s commitment to funding world-class breast cancer research has led to extraordinary discoveries. Discoveries that have fundamentally transformed our understanding of breast cancer and how we improve outcomes for people with this disease. These discoveries will continue to benefit people who are living with breast cancer now and those who will be diagnosed in the future. The article also highlights world-class research led by NBCF-funded researcher Professor Kelly-Anne Phillips, and the importance of NBCF-funding for researchers like Professor Jeff Holst. In March, high value corporate supporters of NBCF attended a private research facility 'behind-the-scenes' tour at Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Perth. NBCF CEO, Associate Professor Cleola Anderiesz gave an overview of our five year strategy and our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. Following that we heard updates on the incredible work of NBCF-funded researchers, Associate Professor Pilar Blancafort, Dr Qi Fang and Professor Brendan Kennedy. Our supporters were then able to view the facility and see the research teams at work.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) was proud to be a partner for the Women in STEMM Leadership Summit held in Melbourne last week. Our CEO Associate Professor, Cleola Anderiesz was part of the CEO panel on Day Two of the summit. The topic of discussion was ‘Empowering Leaders to Champion Change and Challenge Gender Double Standards in STEMM.’ Supporting women in STEMM is vital and NBCF is proud that around 50% of NBCF-funded researchers are women. The funding we provide has meant many female scientists have been able to forge a career in science and make remarkable progress in breast cancer research. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Women Leaders Institute for partnering with us again. We hope to be involved in the event again.

We previously announced that our "Include a Charity 2022" campaign was named a finalist in the "Most Innovative Campaign" category at the Fundraising Institute Australia annual awards. We are now excited to announce that it has been honored with a high commendation award in this prestigious category. This recognition is a testament to our dedication to innovation, which not only stands as a core value but also a pivotal aspect of our fundraising strategy at NBCF. Immense gratitude goes to our dedicated team – Ray Li, Diana Morison, LiYing (Linnea) Wang, and Emma Lloyd – whose creativity and commitment have led us to this moment. The high commendation award was celebrated at the vibrant gala awards dinner in Brisbane, a gathering that unites fundraisers nationwide in celebration of our collective achievements and the innovative spirit that drives our work. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA), fundraising community and everyone who has supported us on this incredible journey.
