The Balancing Act: Managed Services vs. Running Your Own IT Every business, from the solopreneur to the multinational giant, needs a reliable IT infrastructure. But the question remains: should you build your own IT department or outsource to a managed service provider (MSP)? This decision can feel like a balancing act, weighing the pros and cons of each approach. Let's delve into the key areas you may want to consider: Running Your Own IT Department: Pros: Control: You have complete control over your IT systems and data. Customization: Your IT team can tailor solutions to your specific needs. Security: In-house IT staff may have a deeper understanding of your company's unique security vulnerabilities. Cons: Cost: Hiring and retaining qualified IT professionals can be expensive. Scalability: Scaling your IT team up or down can be difficult as your business grows or fluctuates. Expertise: Small businesses may struggle to afford a team with a wide range of IT skillsets. Managed Services: Pros: Cost-Effective: Managed services offer predictable monthly fees, often lower than the cost of a full-time IT staff. Expertise: You gain access to a team of experienced IT professionals with a broad range of skills. Scalability: Managed service providers can easily adjust their services to meet your evolving needs. Focus on Core Business: You can free up your internal resources to focus on your core business activities. Cons: Control: You relinquish some control over your IT systems and data to the MSP. Vendor Lock-In: Some MSPs make it difficult to switch providers in the future. Communication: Clear communication with your MSP is essential to ensure they understand your specific needs. So, which option is right for you? There's no one-size-fits-all answer. Consider these factors: Company Size: Smaller businesses with simpler IT needs may benefit more from managed services. IT Budget: If your IT budget is limited, managed services can offer a cost-effective solution. Technical Expertise: If you lack in-house IT expertise, an MSP can provide the necessary support. Security Priorities: If your data security is paramount, carefully evaluate the MSP's security practices. Ultimately, the best approach lies in understanding your business needs and priorities. Don't be afraid to explore both options and ask questions. Managed services can be a valuable partner, allowing you to focus on your core business while ensuring your IT infrastructure runs smoothly.   If you are looking to explore your best options reach out to our team here at Linktech Australia and we can discuss the best options available to support your business. info@linktechaustralia.com.au   #managedservices #ITdecisions #scaleup #businesstechnologies #ITsupport #cloudcomputing

Welcome back to Security Thursday! Last week, we explored the state of passwords in Australia and the growing trend of password-less authentication. This week let's delve deeper into the Australian Cyber Security Centre's Essential Eight, a powerful framework to fortify your business's defences.   Essential Eight: Your Eight Shields Against Cyber Threats The Essential Eight is a collection of eight mitigation strategies proven to significantly reduce cyber security incidents. While it covers various aspects of security, some directly address password management and complement password-less approaches. Let's explore a few key points: Application Whitelisting: By only allowing authorised applications to run on your systems, you significantly reduce the attack surface for malware that often gains access through vulnerabilities in unapproved software. Patch Application Vulnerabilities: Keeping your software up to date with the latest security patches is crucial. Unpatched vulnerabilities are gateways for attackers to exploit. Configure Microsoft Office Macro Settings to Block All Macros with a Very High-Risk Rating: Malicious macros can be embedded in documents to steal data or compromise systems. Disabling macros by default helps mitigate this risk. Use Multi-factor Authentication (MFA): Even with strong passwords or password-less methods, MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification factor during login attempts. Patch Operating Systems: Similar to application patching, keeping your operating systems updated with the latest security patches is essential. Disable Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) unless required for legitimate business needs: RDP can be a vulnerability if not configured securely. Disabling it when not needed reduces the attack surface. Regular Backups: Regularly backing up your data ensures you have a clean copy to restore in case of a cyberattack. User Application Hardening: This involves configuring applications to minimize their privileges and functionalities, reducing the potential damage if compromised. Building a Robust Security Posture The Essential Eight, along with password-less authentication methods, form a multi-layered approach to enhance your business's security posture. By implementing these strategies, you significantly reduce the risk of cyber incidents and protect your valuable data. Stay tuned for more Security Thursday posts where we'll explore additional security measures and best practices!   #CyberSecurity #EssentialEight #SecurityTips #StaySafe #BusinessGrowth #ThreatAwareness #IncidentResponse #ACSC #MicrosoftSecurity

Welcome to Security Thursday, tips and insights to maintain the fight to protect your business against cyber security threats. Today, we’re celebrating World Password Day, and if you’re wondering why such a day exists, here are some stats based on security vulnerabilities in Australia.   1. Password Reuse: 90% of Australians are aware that using the same password on multiple accounts is a high security risk, however 69% continue to do so, which can lead to vulnerabilities.   2. Password Attacks: There has been a significant increase in password attacks, emphasizing the need for robust password management. Microsoft’s Digital Defence Report indicates that there are 4,000 password attacks per second, which is an almost four-fold increase in two years. https://lnkd.in/g3WSmBZA   The Good News: New best practice methods are now being adopted by businesses in Australia with a key focus on:   3. Shifting Away from Passwords: Many businesses are moving towards eliminating passwords altogether, opting for alternative authentication methods that are more secure. 90% of Australian businesses are actively moving to eradicate passwords from employees’ lives, expecting passwords to represent less than a quarter of their organisation’s logins in five years or less. This is a previous report from Microsoft on password less adoption. We expect this year's report to be out shortly. https://lnkd.in/ez44QhK4   4. Essential 8: This set of strategies, including application whitelisting and timely patching, has been shown to reduce cyber incidents significantly. Part of this approach involves managing passwords effectively and securely.   Look out for our future posts on security and how to improve your security posture to keep your business safe. 🔐   #CyberSecurity #PasswordDay #ProtectYourBusiness #SecurityTips #StaySafe #BusinessGrowth #ThreatAwareness #IncidentResponse #microsoftsecurity
