In March 2022, EWB and Holding Hands Under Ground joined forces to respond to the catastrophic floods that devastated the Northern Rivers community. This was the first time we had embarked on a climate-related disaster recovery project in Australia. With no funding for our engineering response, we mobilised volunteer engineers from across the world to respond to the engineering needs of over 100 flood-affected Northern Rivers residents. Our pro bono industry partners Douglas Partners Pty Ltd and Arup joined us in our recovery efforts and helped provide geo-technical expertise. Two years on from the floods, we have spoken with residents and volunteers to learn what worked well, what did not, and where we could do better in the future to assist communities recovering from disasters. 'Rebuilding the Northern Rivers' shares the stories of flood-affected residents as well as our learnings from this pilot program.
