WHICH CPAP MACHINE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

07/27/2018 Considered as one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century, CPAP is an acronym for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. At the time of CPAP invention, nobody not even its inventor, Dr. Colin Sullivan have imagined its importance to the medical world.

Do you need a CPAP machine?
CPAP machines are designed for obstructive sleep apnea, sleep disorder breathing and snoring. The CPAP keeps the airway from collapsing and provides a fixed amount of pressurized air.
There are several choices available for CPAP machines to choose from, all of which offers different features, comfort, and functionality. Moreover, keep in mind that all have one thing in common and that is they all blow air.

So what are the CPAP machine choices available?
  1. Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP or BPAP). A non-invasive form of therapy for patients which can detect inhaling and exhaling. While CPAP machines can only be set into a single pressure BPAP can change the air pressure during inhaling and exhaling. This dual setting allows the inhale and exhale feel more natural.

  1. An Auto-Titrating Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (APAP). Also, a non-invasive machine which delivers a continuous and steady stream of air of different pressure as needed. This is great for people with different breathing pattern, thus allowing for a more natural sleeping state. APAP can automatically adjust to change in health, weight loss or gain, sleeping positions or even alcohol consumption before bed.

For claustrophobic patients, first get used to the mask, try to take slow and deep breaths against the blowing air. Then try to take an extended amount of time until the anxiety dissipates and you already feel comfortable.
CPAP has its fair share of symptoms are temporary including a dry and runny nose, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing and facial skin irritation. To reduce some of the side effects try to follow some of these tips. Make sure the mask fits to reduce the skin irritation, take allergy medicine for a runny or dry nose. Furthermore, consult a doctor for different CPAP machine that can be suited for you.

Take note of these important factors to remember when buying a CPAP machine:
  1. Listen to your doctor and keep researching.
  2. Strictly follow the prescription.
  3. Do not overthink it. The most important part of a CPAP Machine is actually the CPAP mask. Choose a mask that is of a comfortable fit because it is not a one size fits all.
  4. If you are an average snorer, CPAP machines are not your best sleep apnea treatment option. That is why it is important to ask your doctor for possible alternatives.
There are two people who can decide what CPAP machine is right for you. That is the doctor and the other one is you.
