Tips for Decorating in Black & White

04/18/2013 There's something quite effective about decorating with a selective palette - Black & White being the simplest and most versatile of them all. Selecting accessories or key pieces of furniture is easy as you don't have to colour match to other pieces - you choose items purely because you like them. The choice and combinations are endless -
You can break up the white areas with accessories in black for displaying on shelves or on a coffee table.
You can always use pattern to soften the blocks of shade.
Add patterns and prints with throws, cushions, an amazing wallpapered feature wall or a panel of fabric as a window treatment.
While many pieces can be painted to specification, black furniture has become increasingly available. With a little imagination, a black and white scheme can be a great expression of your personal style.
If you want to create extra edge in your home décor, using a cocktail of the colours of black and white will be that intangible ingredient of sophistication.
Flooring - Using black and white to decorate the floor.
You can go for black flooring for your bathroom, and then use the bathroom fittings in white. This gives it a perfect look.
Tiles and vinyl in the combination of black and white look great. Black & White check is elegant and never goes out of style - looks fantastic in an entrance, kitchen or bathroom.
Walls - If done well this can enhance the look of every house.
Paint your walls black and white. Either paint three walls black and one wall white, or go with diagonal walls painted in the contrast colours.
Stripes of black and white are another option in either paint or wallpaper.
You could also paint the walls white and then use black photo frames or wall hangings on the same wall to add charm.
Entertaining - Spread a black table cloth and display all-white objects on the table. Decorate with silver candle holders for added impact.
Furniture - Using White furniture against a Black wall (or in reverse) or using furniture in complementary (i.e. silver / gold / wenge / birch) shades against a Black & White combination wall can be quite effective.
Finishing Touches - Use black and white shaded rugs, carpets, curtains, soft furnishings, lampshades (all of which suit the colour of your wall)
Lights - You could use chandeliers, light shades, lamp shades which have black and white combined. This way, you could keep it simple yet add the required shades to your décor.
Not only is the black and white combination elegant and sophisticated but it also adds drama to your décor. These techniques allow you to match your home décor with your personality.
